As of 06/04/2011 Carolinas Lead Mid-Atlantic Region with $17 Billion in Projects Under Construction
With more than $17 billion in projects in the construction phase, South Carolina and North Carolina take
the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, for current industrial construction in the region in terms of
value, the states are nearly neck-and-neck, with South Carolina's $8.61 billion in under-construction
projects just edging out North Carolina's $8.47 billion. With 54 projects under way, North Carolina has
the highest number of projects in the region, which in addition to the Carolinas, includes Maryland,
Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
South Carolina, with 26 projects in the construction phase, has fewer overall projects, but more
high-value projects that contribute significantly to the state's overall project value. Virginia, with 29
projects valued at $7.2 billion, ranks third in the region in terms of the value of projects currently under
construction.
Two nuclear-related projects ( I am told have gone non union) located in Aiken, South Carolina, and
owned by the U.S. Department of Energy, dominate the industrial scene in the state. Construction on
the 600,000-square-foot mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel fabrication facility began in the summer of 2007. When
complete, the facility will reprocess 34 metric tons of plutonium into MOX fuel rods to be used in
nuclear power reactors. A special subsidiary of Shaw Group (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) is acting as
engineering and construction firm for the project. Mechanical completion for the project is scheduled
for 2014. The project has an estimated total investment value of $4.8 billion.
As part of a reclamation process under way at the same site, a $1.34 billion facility to treat approximately
33 million gallons of radioactive liquid and salt cakes is being constructed. An additional 5.9 million
gallons may be treated before the process is complete. Construction of this project began in 2008 and
is scheduled for completion in mid-2013.
In North Carolina, Duke Energy Corporation (Charlotte, North Carolina) continues the addition of the
825-megawatt Unit 6 at its Cliffside Power Station ( I am told is also non union). The advanced
pulverized coal-fired unit will allow Duke to retire older, less efficient coal-fired generation when
completed in 2012.
